CD Projekt SA (1988–2011 Optimus SA , 2011–2012 CD Projekt RED SA ) is a Polish developer and publisher of computer games for the international market, including the internationally successful computer role-playing game series The Witcher . The company also operates the distribution platform GOG.com and maintains its own development teams in Warsaw , Krakow and Wroclaw under the internal name "CD Projekt Red" . It is the second company with this name. The original company name was Optimus SA and initially operated as a pure IT service provider. It was only through a reverse takeover of the old CD Projekt RED Sp. Z oo in 2009 that the company took over the current business area and finally the name. The distribution business in Poland was outsourced to a newly founded subsidiary under the company name cdp.pl.

history

1988–2009: Start as an IT service provider

The company was founded in Nowy Sącz in December 1988 under the name Optimus and after the economic reforms in Poland in the course of the system change in 1989 it was registered as a joint stock company . The Optimus SA acted first as a pure IT service for commercial customers and operational from 1996, the specially created online platform Optimus.net that under the later name Onet.pl to the Polish media group 2001 popular online platform Poland grew and ITI was sold. In 2006 the company moved from Nowy Sącz to Warsaw.

2009–2012: Takeover of CD Projekt

After the Polish game developer and publisher CD Projekt RED Sp. Z oo ran into serious financial problems in 2009, Optimus SA signed a letter of intent to take over the troubled company. At the same time, the previous owners of CD Projekt RED Sp. Z oo acquired 50 percent of Optimus SA and thus retained control of the new company as a whole. This so-called reverse takeover in October 2009 enabled CD Projekt to go public. On July 25, 2011, Optimus SA changed its company name to CD Projekt RED SA and merged in October with its subsidiary of the same name, the development studio CD Projekt RED Sp. Z oo , which was previously run as a limited liability company . On September 21, 2012, the new CD Projekt RED SA announced that it would in future run its distribution business in Poland under the company name cdp.pl and founded its own subsidiary under the company name cdp.pl Sp. Z oo . At the same time, a sales platform for games appeared under this URL . In November 2012, the shareholders' meeting decided to rename the parent company CD Projekt SA

Development from 2013

In 2013 CD Projekt sold the rights to the company name Optimus to the Polish company AB SA , which started a new IT service provider under this name. In 2014, leading managers from cdp.pl took over a majority stake in their company, which reduced the stake of the parent company CD Projekt SA to 8.29%. CD Projekt stated that it wanted to concentrate on the development and global marketing of computer games. The company cdp.pl , on the other hand, wants to concentrate exclusively on its core market in Poland.

The release and outstanding reviews of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2015 resulted in a significant increase in the market value of CD Projekt . According to a report by Bloomberg at the end of 2019, the company's stock market value has risen by a full 21,000% over the past ten years. No other company in the STOXX Europe 600 index has so far achieved such an increase . Beginning in 2020, the figure was the Polish company with nearly 7 billion US dollars . At the end of May 2020, CD Projekt became the most valuable company in the games industry in Europe , ahead of Ubisoft, in terms of stock market capitalization (over 38 billion złoty , thus over 9 billion US dollars) .
