history

TPSA was founded in 1991 with the separation of the state-owned postal and telephony company Polska Poczta, Telegraf i Telefon . The company took over the infrastructure related to the telephone business and had a monopoly on the telephone market. A plan had been drawn up for the company beforehand. It includes the modernization of the international network, the development of the fixed network and the expansion and modernization of the local networks. The latter mainly for business customers and the Warsaw area. The network, which had 3.2 million connections in 1990, was to be expanded to ten to twelve million, which corresponds to a level of 28 to 35 connections per 100 inhabitants. Furthermore, the waiting time for a telephone connection should be shortened to two weeks, until then the waiting time was twelve years. As early as 1991, an exchange for international calls was put into operation in Warsaw, which had 3,750 channels; previously, two exchanges were in operation with a total of only 1,690 channels. In 1992 the capacity in Warsaw was increased to 7,500 and an exchange with 1,500 channels was put into operation in Poznan . The separation of the company from the post office and formally from the state was in some cases only inadequate. In 1992, Telekomunikacja Polska transferred the equivalent of 60 million US dollars to Poczta Polska ( Polish Post ) as compensation for losses. At the same time, Telekomunikacja Polska was waived its income tax liability for this amount. In 1993, an exchange for international calls with 1,500 channels was put into operation in Katowice . That year, the company realized a profit equivalent to $ 385.6 million, equivalent to a return on sales of about 27 percent. Until 1996, the state that owned the company was represented by the Minister of Communications, and since then by the Minister of Finance. The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications was thus, at least formally, exempted from the conflict of interest that results from the exercise of market regulation by the Ministry. In 1998, the privatization of the company began with the sale of 30 percent of the shares, of which 15 percent were issued on the stock exchange and the remaining half to employees. In July 2000, 25 percent of the state-owned shares were sold to the consortium France Telecom - Kulczyk Holding . In December 2000, 10.233 million subscribers - or 93 percent of the total subscribers - were TPSA customers. In September 2001 the France Telecom - Kulczyk Holding consortium acquired a further 12.5 percent of the shares. At the end of 2002, Telekomunikacja Polska's legally stipulated monopoly for international connections expired. In 2012, Orange became the company's main brand. On December 31, 2013 the companies TP SA, PTK Centertel and Orange Polska sp. z oo merged to form Orange Polska SA.
