The company's headquarters are in the PZU Tower in Warsaw . Its roots go back to 1803 when the first insurance company was founded on Polish soil. In 1952 she was granted a monopoly in the People's Republic of Poland .

privatization
The company was privatized in 1998. On November 5, 1999, the Polish Ministry of Finance sold 30% of the PZU shares to private investors. Of this, 20% went to the Dutch investor Eureko BV, based in Amsterdam, and 10% to BIG Bank Gdański SA in Gdansk . In 2000, another 15% of the PZU shares were given to employees free of charge. 19,395 people were entitled to receive. On October 4, 2001, the PZU Board of Directors and the Ministry of Finance agreed that a further 21% of the shares would be sold to Eureko as soon as PZU was listed on the stock exchange, which should not happen later than the end of 2002. A further condition was that the Polish Ministry of the Interior approve the sale of further shares. Although Eureko met these conditions, the Ministry of Finance broke the contract with frequent changes of minister, whereupon Eureko filed a lawsuit against the Ministry. For years, governments with different political orientations were unable to come to an agreement with Eureko BV.
The company has been listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange since May 12, 2010 .
