history

The first mention of finding coal at a depth of 15 meters in Volhynia appeared in an article by W. Choroszewski in the journal Pamiętniku Fizjograficznym (Physiographic Diary) in 1881. In 1911 the Russian geologist M. Tietajew suspected carbon deposits on the western slope of the Ukrainian crystal massif. The survey of the massif was carried out by the geologist J. Samsonowicz, who found carbonaceous flint stones in Volhynia in 1931. A year later he presented his concept of the occurrence of carbon deposits in Volhynia and the hypothetical distribution in the area of western Volhynia and southern Poland. Exploration work began in the interwar period. In 1938 carbon was found in Tartaków at a depth of 239 m.

Exploration, interrupted by World War II, resumed in the 1950s. In 1955 an exploration hole was drilled in Chełm, in which coal was found at a depth of 580 to 1208 m. In 1965 the first coal samples were taken from the Łęczna IG-1 well. In January 1975, the Council of Ministers decided to build a pilot and mining mine. Then a state-owned coal mining company was founded.
