The Redengine ( spelling : REDengine ) is a game engine from CD Projekt that was specially developed for their non-linear computer role-playing games .

Overview

The REDengine is portable to 32- and 64-bit - software platforms and runs on Microsoft Windows . REDengine was first used in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings for Microsoft Windows. The REDengine 2, an updated version of the REDengine used in The Witcher 2 , also runs on Xbox 360 and on both macOS and Linux . However, these ports were created with a compatibility layer similar to Wine called eON. The REDengine 3 was developed exclusively for a 64-bit software platform and also runs on the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One .

Versions

REDengine 2

REDengine 2 used middleware like Havok for the physics, Scaleform GFx for the user interface and FMOD for the audio playback . The engine was used for The Witcher 2's Xbox 360 port .

REDengine 3

The REDengine 3 was designed exclusively for use on a 64-bit software platform. CD Projekt designed them for the development of extensive open-world game environments , such as the one in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt .

The engine has improvements for facial and other animations . Light effects no longer suffer from a reduced contrast ratio . The REDengine also supports volumetric effects, which enable an extended display of clouds, haze, fog, smoke and other particle effects . It also supports high resolution textures and texture mapping , dynamic physics and an advanced dialog synchronization system. However, due to limitations in texture streaming, using high-resolution textures is not always the case.

The REDengine 3 has a flexible renderer that is prepared for delayed or accelerated rendering pipelines . The result is a variety of cinematic effects, including depth of field with bokeh , color grading, and lens flare associated with multiple lighting.

The terrain system in REDengine 3 uses tessellation and layers of varying material that can then be easily mixed.

REDengine 4

Cyberpunk 2077 will use REDengine 4, the next iteration of REDengine.
