Tetris 99 ( Japanese title: テトリス99 , Hepburn : Tetorisu 99, stylized as TETRIS 99 ) is a Battle Royale - video game , which from the development studio Arika developed by Nintendo on February 14, 2019 exclusively for the Nintendo switch has been released.

Gameplay

Tetris 99 is a competitive multiplayer variant of the puzzle game Tetris , which borrows from the battle royale game principle. In Tetris 99 mode, the user first plays the well-known Tetris game principle online: the program randomly selects a stone from seven predetermined shapes, which gradually moves down from the upper half of the screen. The player tries to arrange the stones so that there are continuous lines without free spaces. If he succeeds, the line is dissolved - in Tetris 99, however, no points are awarded. If he manages to break up several rows at once by clever arrangement with one stone, this is rated higher than with individual rows. The resolution of four rows at a time is called Tetris. If the player does not get his rows broken up and they pile up to the top of the playing field, the game is over. The level of difficulty of the game is determined, among other things, by the fall time and thus the remaining reaction time of the player.

At the same time as the classic game principle, the player is in competition with 98 human players. By breaking down their rows of blocks, they can interact with each other in various ways, such as attacking each other, countering attacks, and much more. The dismantled rows of blocks are automatically superimposed on the playing field of the selected opponent. So get Tetris 99 additional tactical component. The aim of the game is to be the last to stay alive, i.e. to keep the round of Tetris going the longest. The Tetris 99 mode can only be played with a membership on Nintendo Switch Online . The game supports the saved data cloud of the Nintendo Switch Online service.

The Big Block expansion introduced the possibility of playing against computer opponents.

With the update to version 2.0, new functions have been added. There are now new designs and player symbols that can be unlocked during daily missions. Designs can be purchased with the tickets. If you have reached the Tetris Maximus rank, the highest level in the game, you unlock the so-called Invictus mode in order to be able to compete with players of the same level.

Version 2.1 of the game was released on December 11, 2019. One of the biggest innovations was that you could now buy missed event-exclusive designs with tickets.

publication

Tetris 99 was announced in a Nintendo Direct presentation on February 13, 2019 and was initially made available to members of the Nintendo Switch Online Service for free download from the Nintendo eShop on the following day . Later, only the Tetris 99 mode was playable exclusively for members of the Nintendo Switch online service, as offline game modes were also added to the game by purchasing the Big Block download extension, which was subject to a charge . Nintendo promised to release more game modes for Tetris 99 at a later date. On September 20, 2019, a retail version with the Big Block DLC and a 12-month membership on Nintendo Switch Online was released.

Big Block (add-on)

On May 10, 2019, Nintendo announced the release of the paid download extension called Big Block , which was added to the game via an update on the same day. The DLC also brings the offline game modes Marathon and CPU Battle, for which no membership in Nintendo Switch Online is required, into the game. In the CPU battle mode, you play the Tetris 99 mode against computer opponents instead of human opponents. You have to choose between five levels of difficulty beforehand. The marathon mode works according to the classic Tetris game principle without an opponent: You dismantle as many rows of blocks (150 or 999) as possible in an unlimited amount of time and thus receive points. The game gets faster and faster from level to level. At the beginning you choose whether you want to start with level 1 or level 15. Version 2.0 added new content for the DLC on September 5, 2019. Two players can now compete against computer players on one screen. In addition, it is now possible to play with up to eight players simultaneously in local arenas using a local multiplayer mode.

Events

Nintendo organizes events related to the game at irregular intervals, in which you can win prizes.

The first event called Tetris 99 Grand Prix took place from March 8th to 11th, 2019 and had different rules depending on the region. In Europe, 999 players could each win 999 gold points (equivalent to 9.99 euros ) for the Nintendo eShop . A prerequisite for a chance of winning in Europe was to achieve a first place during the event.

Another Tetris 99 Grand Prix took place from April 12th to 15th, 2019. The rules were adjusted so that instead of a first place at least 100 points in a point system was a prerequisite for a chance of winning. Players from places 99 to 91 received one point, places 90 to 51 four, places 50 to 31 seven, places 30 to 11 ten, places 10 to 4 twenty, place 3 thirty, place 2 fifty and place 1 one hundred points. In Europe, for every 100 points, players got another chance to win.

The third Tetris 99 Grand Prix took place from May 17th (9:00 am) to May 20th (8:59 am ( CEST )). It worked on the same principle as the previous Grand Prix, but instead of 999 gold points, you could now win an exclusive Game Boy design as an alternative to the standard design of Tetris 99 . In addition to a Game Boy style battle screen, this also includes the famous sound effects from the Game Boy version of Tetris . During the event, every player had the Game Boy design and could not fall back on the standard design.

The sixth Tetris 99 Grand Prix started on August 23, 2019 at 9 a.m. and ended on August 27, 2019 at 8:59 a.m. (CEST). As in some previous Tetris 99 Grand Prix, you received points depending on your placement. If 100 points are reached, you received a crossover design in the style of Fire Emblem: Three Houses .

The seventh Grand Prix started on September 20, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. and ended on September 24, 2019 at 8:59 a.m. (CEST). The principle worked like the sixth Grand Prix. This time a super Kirby Clash design and a digital code for 99 apple jewels could be won for the game.

The eighth Grand Prix will start on October 25, 2019 at 9 a.m. and will last until October 29, 2019 at 7:59 a.m. The rules are like the last Grand Prix. This time a design in the style of Luigi's Mansion 3 is up for grabs.

The tenth Grand Prix will start on December 13, 2019 at 8 a.m. and end on December 17, 2019 at 7:59 a.m. The principle worked like the last Grand Prix. The prize is 999 gold points for the Nintendo eShop.
