Monster Hunter Generations ( Japanese モ ン ス タ ー ハ ン タ ー ク ロ ス , Monsutā Hantā Kurosu ) is an action role-playing game developed and published by Capcom for the Nintendo 3DS . The game, announced in May 2015, was released in Japan in November 2015 and internationally in July 2016. Like other titles in the Monster Hunter series, players take on quests in which dangerous creatures are hunted. Major additions to this title include special attacks, new fighting styles, and the ability to play as Felynes, which traditionally only appeared as a companion for the player. An expanded version of the game, titled Monster Hunter XX , was announced in October 2016 and released exclusively in Japan in March 2017. An HD port of the expansion for the Nintendo Switch titled Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate was released in Japan in August 2017, followed by a worldwide release in August 2018.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Monster Hunter Generations is comparable to previous titles in the series: The player takes on the role of a hunter who goes in search of dangerous creatures. A hunter's skills are determined by the type of armor and weapons he wears on a quest, otherwise the hunter has no intrinsic attributes that affect gameplay. All fourteen types of weapons in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate , such as swords, hammers, bows and lances, are included in Monster Hunter Generations , in addition to the new Prowler mode that allows players to play the role of Felynes, a sentient cat-like species take over. Each weapon has different movements and skills that can be used in the game. Armor provides defense bonuses for physical and elemental damage and can improve certain skills and attack types through basic attributes and the addition of special gems and talismans. To create a more powerful hunter who can stand up to more dangerous creatures, the player takes material that has been carved by monsters (either killed or trapped), as well as material that has been collected from the various fields and bought in village shops, to make new ones Manufacture and improve armor or weapons. By defeating more powerful creatures, even more powerful pieces of equipment can be made, thereby advancing through the game's loot system.

Release

Monster Hunter Generations was first announced in Japan under the title Monster Hunter X in May 2015. The release was scheduled for later this year during a Nintendo Direct presentation. A demo of the game was released digitally in Japan on November 19, 2015 via the Nintendo eShop . The demo included three quests with different monsters. The game was then released on November 28, 2015 in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS.

For North America and Europe, the game was released on July 15, 2016 as Monster Hunter Generations , along with the limited edition New Nintendo 3DS XL . The demo version was made available on June 15, 2016 in Europe and on June 30, 2016 in North America.

An expanded version of the game, Monster Hunter XX , was announced in October 2016 and released in Japan on March 18, 2017. Additional downloadable content based on other games was made available for this version shortly after it was released. Newly featured games include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Ace Attorney series, as well as other content based on Ōkami and Strider.

On May 26, 2017, it was announced that the game would be titled " Monster Hunter XX: Nintendo Switch Ver." ported to the Nintendo Switch and released on August 25, 2017. Saving data from Monster Hunter X can be carried over in this version of the game, while progress can also be swapped between the 3DS and Switch versions of XX. Like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate before, XX features cross-platform multiplayer. During the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2017 in June, Capcom announced that at the time there were no plans to localize the Switch version of Monster Hunter XX for Western audiences. That later changed when the title was released as Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate for western markets on August 28, 2018 . Ultimate allows players to transfer saved data from the 3DS game Generations .
