Asaf Epstein ( Hebrew אסף אפשטיין) (Born August 1, 1978 ) is an Israeli director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Asaf Epstein was born on August 1, 1978 in Israel to Lea and Hanan Epstein. He is the oldest brother of Efrat and Roni Epstein.

When he was a little boy, the family moved to Fort Worth ( Texas to) where Epstein, a Jewish private school attended. Then the family moved back to the city of Modiin , Israel. There he attended middle school . In 1995 the family moved back to the United States and settled in Dallas, Texas, where Eppstein attended JJ Pearce High School in Richardson .

In his early twenties, Epstein left his family in the United States and moved back to Israel alone to join the Israeli armed forces, where he took up an office job with the air force .

In the early 2000s, Epstein enrolled at Tel Aviv University for a film degree .

Career

After graduating from college, Epstein produced independent commercials using various computer animation elements.

In 2008 he took part in the production of two Israeli films: The Other War , a drama set in Tel Aviv during the Second Lebanon War , and Jaffawiye , a documentary about the multicultural hip-hop group System Ali .

In 2010, Epstein produced Mother's Fading , a short film about the difficult relationship between a mother and her son.

In 2011 he began producing his award-winning science fiction thriller short film called Schnitzel , which he wrote, produced and directed. Schnitzel tells the story of a young person and their encounter with an extraterrestrial creature that had taken the form of a schnitzel . In 2016, Epstein said in an interview that Schnitzel was inspired by Steven Spielberg's E.T. ; from his own experience of being a clumsy and silly child in his own skin; and of a school trip where he and his schoolmates were given schnitzel to eat.

In July 2014, he released Schnitzel , which earned him numerous awards at festivals around the world, including Best International Film at the South Carolina Cultural Film Festival , Best Science Fiction Film at the Hyart Film Festival and Best International Coming-of-Age at the Manhattan Film Festival 2015. Later that year he was also named Best Producer of a Foreign Language Film at the Madrid International Film Festival .
