The Hopalong Nunatak is a 1450 m high nunatak in the East Antarctic Coatsland . It is the westernmost and highest of the Whichaway Nunatakker in the Transantarctic Mountains .
The first mapping was made in 1957 by participants in the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958). They named it after an Australian slang word for kangaroos in honor of the Australian geologist Philip Jon Stephenson (1930-2011), a participant in the first successful crossing of Antarctica by land.
