The Sega Nomad (also Genesis Nomad , code name : "Venus") is a handheld console version of the Sega Mega Drive (known in North America as Sega Genesis) and was released in October 1995 exclusively in the USA . Due to the moderate success, it was not published in Europe and Japan.
All Genesis games can be played with the Nomad , as well as all Mega Drive games that do not have regional protection. The device can also be connected to a television using Mega Drive 2 AV cables. In addition, the Nomad offers a second controller port so that it can also be used as a full-fledged home console, making it the smallest home console in existence at the time. Power is supplied either via an attachable battery compartment for six AA batteries , an alternatively attachable and rechargeable battery pack called Power-Back (MK-6102), a power adapter for 12 volt car cigarette lighter (MK-2115) or a mega-drive -2 230 volt power supply.
The Nomad came out at a time when 32-bit consoles such as Sega Saturn and PlayStation were already being released. In addition, the Nomad was not marketed as an independent handheld, but as a portable mega drive. These facts and a comparatively short battery life of approx. 2 hours prevented the product from achieving greater success.
