The Sega Mega Drive Mini (in the USA: Sega Genesis Mini ) is a retro game console from the Japanese manufacturer Sega with 42 preinstalled games. It is based on the Mega Drive originally published by Sega , which was mainly marketed from 1988 to 1995. The console emulates the original 16-bit hardware for the pre-selection of original game titles, which varies depending on the sales region. The Mega Drive Mini was released on September 19, 2019.

hardware

The Mega Drive Mini is about half the size of the original console. Inside is the ARM -based ZUIKI Z7213 SoC . The internal flash memory is 512 MB. Depending on the release region, the device comes with one or two replicas of the original controller in original size, which are connected via USB interface . Original controllers, however, cannot be connected. Also included is a USB-to-Micro-B power cable or a USB power supply (North America) and an HDMI cable . There are different variants for North America, Europe, Asia and Japan that correspond to the original designs and colors of these regions. The American and European versions include a controller with three buttons, while the Japanese controllers have six buttons. In North America, officially licensed six-button controllers were offered separately for the Mini. In Japan, other functionless, purely aesthetic additions were offered separately: a miniature of the Sega CD and the Sega 32X , a replica of the lock-on cartridge from Sonic & Knuckles and the standard cartridge Sonic the Hedgehog .

Games

The Mega Drive Mini comes with 42 games, the composition of which varies by region. For example, the Japanese version has all three regional versions of Castlevania: Bloodlines and Contra: Hard Corps , while the American Mini, when changing the language to Japanese, gives the player the title Puyo Puyo , which is not included on the Japanese Mini. The European Mega Drive Mini does not allow access to the American version, with a few exceptions, if the language is set to Korean and Chinese. The European versions Mega Man: The Wily Wars and Earthworm Jim are the American ROMs. The console offers a memory function for all games so that the program can be paused and continued at any time. Games can be played either in the original 4: 3 resolution or stretched to 16: 9 widescreen format , in the latter case with modified HUD elements to fill the screen. The titles Darius and Tetris , which were never released for Mega Drive and are based on earlier arcade versions, have been added as bonus games .

development

The Mega Drive Mini was first announced at the Sega Fes Show in April 2018. Sega thus followed a contemporary trend of releasing former game consoles from the 1980s and 1990s in miniaturized form and with preinstalled games as retro replicas with software emulation. The original release period for the console's 30th anniversary couldn't be met as Sega broke its original partnership with retro console specialist AtGames , whose 2017 Sega Genesis Flashback had received bad reviews for its production quality. Instead of using AtGames' Flashback software, Sega took over the production itself. The new release date was announced September 19, 2019, in Europe and the Middle East on October 4, 2019.

Retro specialist M2 , who had already worked with Sega on Sega Ages and the Sega 3D Classics Collection , was responsible for porting the games to the Mini. It was Sega's first new console hardware since the Dreamcast exited in 2001. The menu music was composed by Yuzo Koshiro , who was also the composer of some of the included games, including The Revenge of Shinobi , Streets of Rage 2 and Beyond Oasis .
