World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck ( Japanese : ア イ ラ ブ ミ ッ キ ー ＆ ド ナ ル ド ふ し ぎ な マ ジ ッ ク ボ ッ ク ス I Love Mickey & Donald: Fushigi na Magic Box ) is a platformer by Sega for the Mega Drive . The game was released in December 1992 and is part of Sega's Illusion game series , based on the cartoon character Mickey Mouse . It was part of the selection of games on the Sega Mega Drive Mini retro console .

Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck discover a magical box as they prepare for a magic show. As it turns out, this belongs to an evil magician who transports Mickey and Donald into a magical world. The two must work together to acquire five spells and use them to find their way home.
Gameplay
The player can play alone either as Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck, in co-op mode everyone takes on one character. Mickey and Donald can run or attack opponents with a magical cloak. Defeated opponents turn into positively connoted magic utensils such as pigeons , playing cards or, depending on the type of opponent, other harmless things. The course of the game changes noticeably depending on the chosen character. For example, Mickey can squeeze through certain narrow crevices, where Donald has to find another path that leads him to completely different level areas.
World of Illusion consists of five themed scenarios called Enchanted Forest, Among the Clouds, Underwater Adventure, The Library and The Magic Box. Depending on the chosen character and whether you play alone or in pairs, there is a different level course in the game. At the end of each scenario there is a boss who guards a new spell for the character, e.g. For example, conjuring up a magic carpet or air bubble for underwater locomotion. With this spell, Mickey and Donald can get into the next scenario.
In the two-player mode, the characters can stand on each other's shoulders and give each other help with ropes. Micky can also pull Donald through crevices that are too narrow, in which he would otherwise get caught with his rump .

World of Illusion followed the Castle of Illusion and Quackshot games .
The background music, the artwork and the animation show influences from Disney cartoons such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , Pinocchio , Fantasia , Sleeping Beauty and Ariel the Mermaid . Some role models were taken directly, such as the playing card soldiers from Disney's film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland , Madame Mim from The Witch and the Magician or Karlo the cat .
On the retro console Sega Mega Drive Mini , World of Illusion was one of the 42 preinstalled titles together with its predecessor Castle of Illusion .

"Although the top opponents are easy to defeat, World of Illusion is one of the best mega-drive games for me, as the graphic presentation and playful gags are impressive for all old and young fans."
