Golden Ax is an arcade game (game genre: Beat 'em up ) by the Sega company , which was particularly successful in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and in addition to almost all Sega game consoles and slot machines also on the Commodore Amiga , Atari ST , Commodore 64 and the PC has appeared. There are three parts of this game for the Sega Mega Drive. A new version of Golden Ax for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 was announced at E3 2006 .

The game was indexed in 1989 by the "Federal Inspectorate for Writings Harmful to Young People" (BPjS, today the BPjM ) , but appears as part of the 2006 compilation Sega Mega Drive Collection for PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable from 12 years of age, which implies a lifting of the indexing. The mega-drive version emulated by the Nintendo Wii was released from the age of six following a new classification by the USK . Golden Ax II was released exclusively for the Mega Drive in 1991. The third part was only officially released in 1993 in Japan.

For arcade machines , the successors Golden Ax - The Revenge of Death Adder (1992) and Golden Ax - The Duel (1995), a beat 'em up similar to Street Fighter , appeared after Golden Ax . This part was also released for the Sega Saturn in 1996. The Golden Ax Warrior, which is very reminiscent of Zelda , appeared as spin-offs for the Sega Master System and the action role-playing game Ax Battler: A Legend of Golden Ax for Game Gear . A port for the WonderSwan Color was released by Bandai . As part of the Sega Ages 2500 series for the Playstation 2 released in Japan, Golden Ax was released in 2003 in a 3D version. This version is also included in the Sega Classic Collection released in 2005. At the end of 2007 the game Golden Ax: Beast Rider appeared for the PS3 and the XBOX 360, which was indexed by the BPjM in Germany at the beginning of 2009.

Plot and course

As usual in games of this genre, the player tries to fight his way through several levels . The background story is about a country "Yuria", whose king and princess were kidnapped by the person "Death Adder". In the second and third part and in The Revenge of Death Adder there are several ways to get there, mostly by being able to choose between two levels in the cutscenes.

The player has five Continues to three life that allow one to continue to play on site immediately. The game can also be played in two-player mode.

Characters

There are three characters in this game:

  • The barbarian "Ax Battler", whose mother was killed by "Death Adder". Despite the name, which has a certain resemblance to the English "Ax Battler" (ax fighter), the figure is portrayed with a large sword.
  • The dwarf "Gilius Thunderhead" fighting with a golden ax , whose brother was killed by "Death Adder".
  • The third playable character is "Tyris Flare", an Amazon armed with a sword . "Death Adder" is said to be responsible for the death of Tyris' parents.

In terms of playing technique, the characters differ mainly in the ratio of power to magic. The Amazon has the most magical energy and the dwarf the greatest impact. In addition, each character has a different magical effect (Amazon - fire, barbarian - earth, dwarf - lightning). The magic spell is stronger the more magical energy the player can use.

In Golden Ax - The Revenge of Death Adder there is a female centaur instead of the Amazon and there is also a dwarf with a pitchfork and a giant on whose back a dwarf sits to choose from.

In Golden Ax 3 there were again new characters. Of the old, only "Gilius Thunderhead" appears. In addition to the semi-giant “Braoude Cragger” and the humanoid panther “Chronos Lait”, these are the two people “Kain Grinder” and “Sarah Barn” who are clearly similar to “Ax Battler” and “Tyris Flare”.

Items

In the game there are blue bottles for recharging magical powers and food for recharging vital energy. Both can be achieved by attacking gnomes , who in turn try to steal items from the players while they are asleep. Dragons and other fantasy creatures can be looted from opponents during the game . These beings, which serve as mounts, have various abilities, such as being able to attack with their tails or to spit fire.
