Space Harrier II ( Japanese ス ペ ー ス ハ リ ア ー II , Supēsu Hariā II ) is a shoot-'em-up game from 1988 and the successor to Space Harrier , which was released in 1985 . Like its predecessor, Space Harrier II was developed and published by Sega AM2 . The game developer in charge was Yū Suzuki , who also developed the predecessor game and was president of AM2 at the time. Space Harrier II is a so-called launch title , which means that the game was initially produced exclusively for the Sega Mega Drive (Sega Genesis in North America).
action
The action takes place in the year 6236. The main character, the Harrier, receives - as in the first part - a cry for help from a distant galaxy, this time from the 214th sector. With the help of a warp portal, the Cosmic Gate , he travels to fantasy land , which has been invaded again by evil creatures. His task is to defeat the evil creatures in order to save fantasy land.
Gameplay
As with the predecessor, the player slips into the role of the harrier armed with a laser cannon. Each of the twelve levels has a similar structure, the player controls the running or hovering Harrier through colorful regions, the floors and ceilings of which are set up as a checkerboard pattern . In all twelve levels, the Harrier is confronted with different enemies who appear from all directions of the screen, move in different ways and who often fire their own laser volleys or bursts of fire. These enemies can be overcome either by evading or using weapons. By pressing any button, the Harrier fires a volley of a maximum of four laser beams from its weapon. Automatic firing can also be set in the game menu. There are also fixed elements in the game, such as conifers , plants or ancient columns , some of which can be removed with a weapon. Most of the fixed elements have to be avoided. If you collide with an object, an enemy or if you are hit by an enemy attack, the Harrier loses a life. When all lives are used up, the game ends and the player has the opportunity to enter himself into a highscore table .
At the end of each level you meet a more or less difficult boss to defeat. Basically, all twelve levels are available to the player as a starting point right from the start. However, you have to complete all levels to get to the last level. This is called the Final Chapter and only consists of the fight against the antagonist , the Dark Harrier . If you defeat this, you have successfully completed the game.
Ports
Originally produced exclusively for the Sega Mega Drive, the game penetrated the European video game market in the course of 1990 . Versions for Amiga , Amstrad , Atari ST , C64 and ZX Spectrum were produced. In 2005 Sony released a PlayStation 2 edition for the Japanese market , which contains all the games in the Space Harrier series . In 2006, Nintendo made it possible to download the game to the Nintendo Wii via Virtual Console . Space Harrier II has also been available for mobile devices since 2010 ( iOS App Store ) and 2017 ( Google Play Store ) .
