Space Harrier is an Arcade - Shoot-'em-up that of AM2 developed in 1985 by Sega has been released. Two successors were programmed for the game: Space Harrier 3D (1988), Space Harrier II (1989), and the offshoot Planet Harrier (2001). As with After Burner , the game gives the appearance of scrolling into the screen .

Space Harrier is set in the so-called "Fantasy Zone", a surreal game world that Sega took up again in 1986 with a game of the same name . This “Fantasy Zone” is represented with bright colors, a checkerboard-like floor and opponents such as prehistoric animals, dragons from Chinese mythology and extraterrestrial-looking equipment. The system forces the character on a prescribed path through the individual levels ; the player can only move them horizontally and vertically to avoid enemy fire and aim.

Space Harrier is one of the first arcade games to use a hydraulic sit-down arcade machine that moves according to the player's joystick movements. An immovable sit-down version and a standard housing were also produced.
The game uses digitized voices. For example, at the beginning of the first level, the player is greeted with the following phrase: “Welcome to the Fantasy Zone! Get Ready! ”
There are a total of 18 levels, each ending with a boss fight. Exceptions, however, are bonus levels five and twelve, as well as the last level in which the player must defeat the 15 previous bosses.
