Puyo Puyo ( Japanese ぷ よ ぷ よ ), also known as Puyo Pop , is a puzzle game that was published by Compile for various game consoles from 1991 onwards . The chief developer was Masamitsu "Moo" Niitani .

Before the games in the series were renamed Puyo Pop outside of Japan , versions appeared under the names of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine ( Sega Mega Drive ), Kirby's Ghost Trap (in the US Kirby's Avalanche , SNES ) and Puzlow Kids ( Game Gear ).

It is based on the characters of the role-playing game series Madō Monogatari , which also comes from the pen of Masamitsu "Moo" Niitani.

Gameplay

Similar to the strategy classic Tetris , falling blocks (here Puyos ) have to be sorted by color. However, you always play against a virtual or human opponent. As soon as four or more stones of the same color come together, they dissolve and, if necessary, trigger a chain reaction as the puyos slide down further, which creates so-called sturgeon puyos on the playing field , which can only be removed there by another chain reaction. The player whose field is completely filled first has lost.
