history
In the Middle Ages, the Counts of Armagnac handed over the administration to Condom Abbey. This built a castle around 1270, of which a ruin still stands today. Before 1789 the municipality belonged to the county of Vic-Fezensac within Gascony . Lagardère was part of the District Condom from 1793 to 1801. Since 1801, the community has been assigned to the Condom arrondissement. Lagardère was part of the canton of Valence-sur-Baïse from 1793 to 2015 .
Population development
The community shows a development typical of French rural communities with a strong loss of population since the early 19th century. Between 1793 and 1841 the population grew rapidly. This was followed by a period of strong population fluctuations with several waves of emigration and growth phases until 1911. Between 1921 and 1962 the number of inhabitants changed only insignificantly. In 1999 the population reached its all-time low (1841–1999: -79 percent). Since then it has been growing again.
