history

The chocolate and confectionery factory was founded in 1869 as the “First Würzburg canning and chocolate factory by WF Wucherer u. Cie. ”(Postal addresses around 1887: apartment and factory at Pleicherglacisstrasse 8, and shop at Kaiserstrasse 16) in Würzburg from the WF Wucherer confectionery , located at Plattnerstrasse 14 in the building of the former Krautheim Curia. On June 5, 1894, the company was given the title of royal Bavarian purveyor to the court. On July 7, 1911, the company "Frankonia Schokolade- und Konservenfabrik, formerly WF Wucherer & Co., Akt.-Ges." from the existing canning and chocolate factory. The share capital was 325,000 marks. On January 28, 1928 the name was changed from "Frankonia Schokolade- und Konservenfabrik, formerly WF Wucherer & Co., Akt.-Ges." in "Frankonia Schokoladenwerke Aktiengesellschaft".

In the 1930s she started producing chocolates with fructose . The Frankonia Schokolade company was taken over in 1977 by the French Cantalou-Cémoi Group, which also had its origins in the production of chocolate at the beginning of the 19th century. With the takeover, the company headquarters moved to Veitshöchheim , as there were no expansion opportunities at the original location in Würzburg .

Since March 1982 the company has been called "Frankonia Schokoladenwerke GmbH". In 1998 Frankonia expanded by purchasing the “Philipp Born GmbH” chocolate factory, branded Holex , and took over the PEA division from Van Houten GmbH & Co. KG. In 2004 Frankonia was the brand leader in the diet chocolate sector.

In 2011, the elimination of the diet regulation led to production losses. A reorientation brought about the lactose-free chocolates. Since 2015 the company has also been marketing vegan and organic chocolate products. Chocolate bars without added sugar were introduced in 2018. Since 2019 there has also been high protein lower carb chocolates that are both reduced in sugar and enriched with high quality protein. In the same year, Frankonia Schokoladenwerke celebrated its 150th company anniversary.
