Palazzo Farnese in Rome with canopies. Cornices on the ground floor and gables on the upper floors

A canopy is a protruding member over a wall opening, door or window , in the shape of a cornice or pediment . A roof can be both roof-like-protective and ornamental-decorating, in the sense of a crowning .

The technical term from the history of architecture and art can often be found in compositions such as portal roofing , door roofing or window roofing .

Roofings as ornamental gables can take up all forms that are also used in building gables (for example triangular gable , segmented gable , split gable , volute gable ). In the Renaissance and Baroque periods , window roofing became an important motif in facade design and took on ever richer forms.
