Outcrop of Urft with a small aqueduct bridge

An interesting outcrop of the Eifel aqueduct with a culvert is located at Kall - Urft near Dalbenden Castle, just beyond the boundary in the Keldenich district . With the help of culverts under the Roman Eifel aqueduct , which supplied the Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium , ancient Cologne , with drinking water, the Romans bridged small watercourses. The passage at Urft was used to overcome a small dry valley in the northern slope of the Urft. Here the Romans had to be particularly careful with the gradient in order to be able to overcome the watershed between Urft and Erft or between Maas and Rhine near Kall- Dottel . In the area of the culvert, the water pipe, which was otherwise underground to protect against frost, was above ground for a small part. Here it transported the water from the spring socket on the Grüner Pütz in the Urft valley to the watershed, behind which the other source areas of the Eifel aqueduct were. The dry valley only carried water when it rains and snowmelts, which could then be drained through the passage under the canal without being damaged.

The passage has an arch with a clear width of 0.9 m. Today it can only be seen from the valley side, as rubble has accumulated on the mountain side in front of the passage over time. The structure is station 6 of the Römerkanal hiking trail , which was renewed in 2012, and the most important outcrop of the Eifel aqueduct in the municipality of Kall and between Grüner Pütz and Klausbrunnen .
