Giovanni Battista Gaulli (born May 8, 1639 in Genoa , † April 2, 1709 in Rome ), also called ( Il ) Baciccio or Baciccia , was an Italian baroque painter . He is particularly known as a fresco and portrait painter and worked mainly in Rome.

Life

Giovanni Battista Gaulli lost his parents in 1657 due to a plague epidemic . He was a student of Luciano Borzone in Genoa. Around 1653 he moved to Rome, where he became a close friend of the famous painter and sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini . This brokered numerous commissions for him in Rome .

In 1662 he was admitted to the Accademia di San Luca and in 1674 became President ( Principe ) of this art academy.

Artistically he was initially inspired by, among others, Peter Paul Rubens and Anthonis van Dyck , as well as Pietro da Cortona .

His most famous work are the monumental ceiling frescos in the church Il Gesù (1668–1683) in Rome, in which he succeeded in depicting an overwhelming heavenly light. In other works, too, he tends towards bright colors, loveliness and z. T. spectacular light effects. His portraits are characterized by great liveliness and often capture the person portrayed seemingly effortlessly and with lovable humor in a moment of spontaneity.
