Commissioned work in art

In art, pictures (painted, drawn, photographed) and sculptures, but also pieces of music (commissioned compositions) or poems are the subject of ( paid ) commissioned work.

Many artists in the visual arts make a living from commissioned work. Especially in the Middle Ages , rulers and wealthy merchant families had commissioned work made for portraits of their relatives or themselves. It was also common at this time for entire orchestral works to be composed to order.
