Johann III. (* 1469 ; † June 17, 1516 in Monains ) was King of Navarre from 1484 to 1512 ; he is also known under the name of Jean d'Albret .

He was the fourth son of Alain d'Albret , Count of Gavre and Castres , and Françoise de Châtillon († 1481), Countess of Périgord and Vice Countess of Limoges .

On July 14, 1484, he married Katharina von Navarra (* 1470, † 1517) in Orthez , who the year before had become Queen of Navarre, Countess of Foix and Bigorre and Vice Countess of Béarn , the daughter of Gaston de Foix , the Hereditary Prince, who died at an early age of Navarre. At their side, Jean d'Albret became King of Navarre until the couple was expelled in 1512 by Ferdinand II , King of Aragón , who represented his own inheritance claims.

Jean d'Albret or John III. and Katharina had 13 children, only 4 of whom reached adulthood, including among others

  • Henry II , * 1503, † 1555, Count of Foix and Bigorre, Vice-Count of Béarn and Marsan (the area around Mont-de-Marsan ) Titular King of Navarre
  • Isabelle d'Albret, Infanta of Navarre, later wife of René I. Vicomte de Rohan

Jean d'Albret died before his father, so that he could not take a title from his inheritance. His mother's inheritance went to his older siblings, probably also because he already owned property with the crown of Navarre.
