Chadae (* 71 ; † 165 ) was the seventh ruler of the state of Goguryeo , the northern of the Three Kingdoms of Korea . He ruled from 146 until his death in 165.

Life

According to the Samguk Sagi , Chadae was a younger brother of King Taejo . Under his rule he successfully fended off attacks by the Chinese Empire ( Han dynasty ). At court, Chadae eliminated the rivals U Bo and Go Bok-jang and succeeded his brother, who was almost a hundred years old, to the throne in 146.

Chadae's rule is characterized as tyrannical. He eliminated a number of possible competitors at the court: he killed two sons of his predecessor and a younger brother, and had his youngest brother (the later ruler Sindae ) persecuted. Some natural disasters and civil unrest reportedly put an end to Chade's rule. After the Samguk Sagi , Chadae was murdered by his Supreme Minister Myeongnim Dapbu, after the (less credible) Samguk Yusa , his brother Sindae and his predecessor Taejo killed him.
