Ayen ( Occitan : aient ) is a French municipality with 714 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of department of Corrèze in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .
geography
Ayen is located between the neighboring communities of Saint-Cyprien in the east, Perpezac-le-Blanc in the south and Saint-Robert in the west, 19 kilometers northwest of the city of Brive-la-Gaillarde and about 67 kilometers south of Limoges on the D39 from Juillac to Terrasson- Lavilledieu in the west of the Limousin. The Elle river flows through the municipality.

history
The place name was first mentioned as Aen and Aent in 1025 and has the same origin as Agen , Aginnum . Ernest Nègre thinks the meaning is unknown and only indicates that the words are Celtic . It assumes that -inno is a place-name broadcast. While Lacroix translates aginno- as a Gallic place name with “rock”. Around 850 the then Viscount of Limoges had a moth built on the hill of Ayen. Which became the seat of the Bernhard family, who renamed themselves Ayen around the year 1000 . At the same time, the Ayen parish was part of the Sauvignac monastery .

Culture and sights
Ayen is represented with a flower in the Conseil national des villes et villages fleuris (National Council of Flowered Cities and Villages). The "flowers" are awarded in the course of a regional competition, whereby a maximum of three flowers can be achieved.
The walls of the parish church of Sainte-Madeleine show several niches from the 14th century. They are so-called enfeus , graves of high-ranking personalities. These enfeus were classified as Monuments historiques (historical monuments) in 1900 .
The remains of the moth on the hill were officially registered as a Site Inscrit (natural monument) in 1990.
Museums
The place has a transport and local history museum in which more than 36 old professions, means of transport and traditions are presented.
Economy and Infrastructure
Ayen is a station verte de vacances (green vacation spot). Station verte is a name given to vacation spots that have fewer than 10,000 inhabitants, offer year-round leisure activities, have a tourist office, have at least 200 guest beds, have sufficient shopping opportunities in the village and are close to nature.
Main occupations of the Ayennois are viticulture , fruit growing and the breeding of domestic cattle , domestic sheep and domestic pigs . There is a nursery on site.
