geography

Tulle , the prefecture of the department, is about 19 kilometers northeast, Brive-la-Gaillarde about 14 kilometers slightly southwest and Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne about 32 kilometers southeast. The municipality is located on the left bank of the Corrèze River . The Coiroux , a tributary of the Roanne , forms the border with the neighboring municipality of Palazinges .

From its lowest height of 126 meters in the west on the banks of the Corrèze, the terrain in the southeast at the Puy de Pauliac rises to over 520 meters. The center of the community lies on a promontory that overlooks the Coiroux by more than 150 meters. The approximately 24 hectare Lac du Coiroux is located about five kilometers to the northeast.

traffic

Junction 49 to Autobahn 20 is about 16 kilometers to the northwest. The former national road 89 , after the construction of the Autobahn 89 only Départementsstraße 1089 , touches the municipality to the east. The railway line Coutras -Tulle crosses the municipality from west to north, the entry point is the Gare d'Aubazine.

history

Aubazine, originally Obazine , later Aubazine and today Aubazines (the "S" at the end resulted from an incorrect transfer in a card), was a monastery founded in the 12th century by the Cistercian Saint Étienne d'Obazine . A short time later a nunnery ( Coyroux monastery ) was built in Coyroux a few hundred meters away . The monasteries existed until the French Revolution . At that time, Aubazines was a Cornil branch.

In the last third of the 20th century, the site was the subject of major archaeological excavations by the historian Bernadette Barrière .

Gare d'Aubazine

The small town of Gare d'Aubazine , located in the municipality of Saint-Hilaire-Peyroux , is an integral part of the history of Aubazines and Dampniat, far more than that of Saint-Hilaire, as this station was first to be called Gare de Dampniat . But this place was completely unknown and also difficult to spell, Saint-Hilaire was too far away.

Aubazine, this name combines eight centuries of history with a great tourist reputation: a remarkable church, two monasteries and canals hanging over wild gorges as well as striking rock formations and megalithic structures. From 1932 the local railroad was replaced by a bus, but the place continued to develop positively.
