Monastery Coyroux (also Coiroux) is a former Cistercian - Priory in the village of Aubazines in Correze in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine in France . It has been classified as a monument historique since 1988 .

history

The monastery was founded in 1142 by Étienne d'Obazine and from the beginning was subordinate to the Obazine Monastery as a priory , with which it joined the Cistercian Order in 1147. It is only a few hundred meters away from the Obazine monastery in a small, damp valley floor threatened by flooding and, together with Obazine, forms one of the few double monasteries in the Cistercian order. It only took two years to build the facility. The number of nuns quickly increased to 150. In the 17th century, the prioress Jeanne de Badefol received from King Ludwig XIII. permission to move the convent to the town of Tulle ( Saint-Bernard monastery ), where it came to an end during the French Revolution , while part of the nuns stayed in Coyroux until the Revolution. Excavations took place between 1976 and 1990.

Construction and plant

Excavations have shown that the monastery was built on an artificial terrace for which the course of the Coyroux brook was relocated. The church, built in the 12th and 13th centuries and only preserved as a ruin, had a ribbed vault without a transept and a flat closed presbytery separated from the nave had a rectangular floor plan. The cloister had a side length of 22 meters.
