Altillac ( Altilhac in Occitan ) is a French municipality with 861 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Correze in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The inhabitants call themselves Altillacois (es) .
geography
The municipality is located in the Massif Central on the left bank of the Dordogne in the lower part of the Xaintrie . The prefecture of the department, Tulle , is about 40 kilometers north, Argentat a good ten kilometers northeast and Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne about one kilometer west.
Neighboring municipalities of Altillac are Bassignac-le-Bas in the north, Reygade in the north-east, Mercœur in the east, Gagnac-sur-Cère in the south, Astaillac in the south-west, Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne in the west and Brivezac in the north-west.

history
Stone witnesses such as Neolithic large stone graves already prove a prehistoric settlement of the municipality area. But it was not until the Gallic - Roman period that a community developed under the name Altillac, whose etymological roots lie in the Latin Altus Locus , meaning high place . Thereafter, in Carolingian times , Altillac became a seat of a viguerie .
During the Second World War , on May 28, 1942, the Château du Doux was requisitioned by the regional prefect in Limoges as an internment camp for Jewish families.
