The 12th stage of the Tour de France 2016 was held on July 14, 2016. It led over 178 kilometers from Montpellier up to the Chalet Reynard ski station on Mont Ventoux . There was a mountain classification of the 4th, 3rd and the Hors Catégorie and an intermediate sprint in Mollégès after 102.5 kilometers. The climb to Mont Ventoux was the steepest on average on the 103rd Tour of France.
Due to expected gusts of more than 100 km / h on Mont Ventoux at 1912 m, the destination was moved to the Chalet Reynard ski station at 1435 m. This shortens the stage by 6 kilometers from the original 186 kilometers.
Race course
Immediately after the start there were the first attempts to break away. A top group of 13 drivers formed: Bert-Jan Lindeman , Sep Vanmarcke (both TLJ), Stef Clement (IAM), Serge Pauwels , Daniel Teklehaimanot (both DDD), André Greipel , Thomas De Gendt (both LTS), Bryan Coquard , Sylvain Chavanel (both DEN), iljo keisse (EQS), Daniel Navarro , Cyril Lemoine (both COF) and Chris Anker S ø rensen (VFC). Behind them was a chasing group consisting of Diego Rosa (AST), Cyril Gautier (ALM), Tom Slagter (CDT), Georg Preidler (TGA), Vengard Breen (FVC), Paul Voss (BOA).
The leading group quickly made up a lot of time, the pursuers were initially about a minute behind, but could not keep up with the pace and fell behind. After 28 kilometers, the 13 leaders were about six minutes ahead of the peloton. At around 2:20 p.m. the gap between the lead group and the peloton was over 18 minutes, the pursuers were 5:50 minutes behind the front.
Crosswinds again led to the breakup of the peloton, among other things, the Giant-Alpecin team around Warren Barguil had to fill a gap. At the front in the main field, Etixx-Quick Step made pace, so that the lead of the outliers decreased a bit for the first time, but at the same time the left-behind drivers did not come back to the front. The German Emanuel Buchmann (BOA) was also there. But they finally managed to catch up when the front speed was reduced again.
On the ascent to Mont Ventoux, the first riders fell back from the leading and chasing group, including Paul Voss and Bryan Coquard, who was fourth in the intermediate sprint behind Greipel, Lindeman and Keisse. Thomas De Gendt finally launched an attack that only Serge Pauwels and Daniel Navarro could follow.
In the main field, Jarlinson Pantano (IAM) and Alejandro Valverde (MOV) attacked first , then Valverde's team-mate Nairo Quintana . The runs further decimated the field of favorites, among other things, the overall third Daniel Martin and Tinkoff captain Roman Kreuziger fell back.
Four kilometers from the finish, the favorite group consisted of the following drivers: Chris Froome , Sergio Henao , Wout Poels (all SKY), Alejandro Valverde, Nairo Quintana (both MOV), Fabio Aru (AST), Romain Bardet (ALM), Bauke Mollema (TFS), Richie Porte , Tejay van Garderen (both BMC), Warren Barguil (TGA) and Joaquim Rodríguez (KAT). In the leading group, which was still in the lead for around seven minutes, Thomas De Gendt attacked again, only Serge Pauwels followed.
Further attacks followed: Pauwels on De Gendt, which was able to follow; Froome in the favorite group, only Quintana and Porte stayed on his rear wheel. Quintana was then a few meters behind, while Fabio Aru and Bauke Mollema were in pursuit. In the battle for the stage win, Daniel Navarro initially managed to get back to the two leading drivers, but in the end he had to let them both go again and De Gendt won the stage just before Pauwels.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Valverde had caught up with Nairo Quintana, both tried to keep the damage within limits, but they were around 20 seconds behind Froome and Porte, with Bauke Mollema in between. A spectator standing too close to the track then forced a camera support motorcycle to brake fully about 1.5 kilometers from the finish. Chris Froome, Bauke Mollema and Richie Porte started up and fell. The frame of Frome's wheel broke. He then ran about 300 meters, where he received a new, neutral bike, later he switched to one of his team's bikes. He was first overtaken by a few other drivers, Mollema was the first of the favorites to cross the finish line. Richie Porte was also disabled and crossed the finish line behind.
Initially, Froome's fall was considered a normal racing accident, so that Adam Yates (OBE) was the new overall tour leader for a short time . The jury later revised this decision and evaluated the race from 10th place with the distances at the time of the fall, so Froome stayed in yellow and even extended his lead, as Adam Yates, Daniel Martin and Nairo Quintana were behind the British at this point lay.
Thomas De Gendt secured 50 points in the mountain classification with first place in the ascent of the Hors Catégorie, and he took the lead. In the overall standings, Chris Froome was now 47 seconds ahead of Adam Yates and 54 seconds ahead of Nairo Quintana.
