The 19th stage of the Tour de France 2016 was held on July 22, 2016. It led over 146 kilometers from Albertville to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains . There was a mountain classification of the second category, two mountain classifications of the first and one of the Hors Catégorie as well as an intermediate sprint in Doussard after 25.5 kilometers. The stage ended at Saint-Gervais in a mountain finish after a climb in the first category.
Race course
After the start, there was an unclassified, eight-kilometer climb straight up. Thomas De Gendt (LTS) attacked with the aim of still being able to win the mountain classification ahead of Rafał Majka (TNK). He pulled along and a breakaway group of 20 riders formed. They were Alexei Luzenko (AST), Robert Kišerlovski , Rafał Majka (both TNK), Alexis Vuillermoz (ALM), George Bennett (TLJ), Jarlinson Pantano (IAM), Pierre Rolland (CDT), Marcus Burghardt , Amaël Moinard (both BMC ), Natnael Berhane (DDD), Laurens ten Dam (TGA), Emanuel Buchmann (BOA), Rui Costa (LAM), Thomas De Gendt, Tony Gallopin (both LTS), Tony Martin (EQS), Daniel Navarro (COF), Michael Matthews (OBE), Eduardo Sepúlveda and Vegard Breen (both FVC).
Michael Matthews won the intermediate sprint ahead of De Gendt and Buchmann. The 20 men at the top had about four minutes ahead of the peloton, in which the Astana team led by Fabio Aru set the pace. The Katusha team also took part in the follow-up work to position Joaquim Rodríguez . On the climb to the Col de la Forclaz de Montmin (1st category) the leaders had three minutes left on the group of favorites.
The first mountain classification of the day was won by Thomas De Gendt ahead of Rafał Majka and Alexis Vuillermoz. These three drivers had been able to pull away easily in the meantime, but were caught again by the pursuers on the descent. De Gendt also secured the maximum number of five points ahead of Majka in the following mountain classification in the second category.
After a short descent, the leading group tackled the Montée de Bisanne (HC). They were 2:30 minutes ahead as Astana and Katusha in the peloton continued to keep up the pace. The leading group was reduced to 14 drivers. At the summit, Majka collected the complete 25 mountain points because Thomas De Gendt had fallen behind. The lead was now only 1:45 minutes with a continuing downward trend.
About 50 kilometers from the finish it started to rain. Rui Costa and Pierre Rolland pulled away a bit on the descent. Rolland fell in a curve on the wet track and fell back, leaving Rui Costa alone in the front. There were also some falls in the peloton due to the bad weather conditions. Second- placed Bauke Mollema (TFS) also fell, as did Chris Froome (SKY) and Vincenzo Nibali (AST). The last remaining pursuer, Daniel Navarro, slipped away and injured himself so badly that he had to give up the tour. The other outliers had been overtaken by the approaching peloton, about a minute behind Rui Costa.
At the end of the descent from Montée de Bisanne, Romain Bardet (ALM) attacked and went in pursuit of Costa. In the field, Chris Froome was able to catch up again, while Mollema was further behind. Romain Bardet approached Costa on the last climb (1st category), while the favorites were about a minute behind them. Finally the Frenchman was able to break away from Costa and drove towards the stage win.
In the group of favorites, in which around 15 drivers remained, there were attacks by Daniel Martin (EQS), Nairo Quintana (MOV), Richie Porte (BMC) and Fabio Aru (AST). However, they couldn't properly distance Chris Froome. Alejandro Valverde (MOV) and Nairo Quintana were together in front, while Porte and Adam Yates (OBE) lost some time. Bauke Mollema had missed reconnecting with the favorite group and was now well behind. Finally, Chris Froome showed slight weaknesses, so that Rodríguez, Valverde, Quintana, Louis Meintjes (LAM), Fabio Aru and Daniel Martin were able to make up about ten seconds on the overall leader.
Romain Bardet won the mountain finish 23 seconds ahead of Rodríguez and Valverde, Froome was ninth, 36 seconds behind Bardet.
In the end, the 19th stage brought some changes among the top ten drivers in the overall classification compared to the ranking after the 18th stage:
