The 17th stage of the Tour de France 2016 was held on July 20, 2016 after the second day of rest. It led over 184.5 kilometers from Bern to the mountain arrival in Finhaut - Emosson . There were two mountain classifications in the third category, a mountain classification in the first and one in the Hors Catégorie as well as an intermediate sprint in Martigny after 150 kilometers. The stage was held entirely on Swiss territory.

Race course

Up until the mountain classification on the Saanenmöser Pass after about 70 kilometers, none of the escape groups managed to leave, as the peloton was driven very quickly: the peloton covered about 52 kilometers in the first hour. In the mountain classification, Rafał Majka (TNK) and his teammate Peter Sagan finally managed to break away and win the mountain classification. This step formed the starting point for the emergence of an escape group, which initially included Peter Sagan, Rafał Majka, Domenico Pozzovivo (ALM), Jarlinson Pantano , Stef Clement (both IAM), Steve Morabito (FDJ), Ilnur Sakarin (KAT), Brice Feillu ( FVC), Tanel Kangert (AST), Kristijan Đ urasek (LAM) and Tony Gallopin (LTS). In the descent after the second mountain classification, which Majka won ahead of Pantano, Greg Van Avermaet (BMC), Thomas Voeckler (DEN) and Alexei Luzenko (AST) caught up from a chasing group two minutes behind. The peloton was already over eleven minutes behind after the pace was significantly reduced there.

The intermediate sprint after 150 kilometers was left to Peter Sagan, who is unassailable in the points classification after Mark Cavendish (DDD) left. Then it went straight to the ascent to Col de la Forclaz , where Sagan dropped back. Tony Gallopin and Alexei Lutsenko attacked in the top group, while the peloton, led by the Sky and Movistar teams, also started the climb. There were Warren Barguil (TGA), Emanuel Buchmann (BOA) and Vincenzo Nibali (AST) back.

At the front, Lutsenko was now alone in the front for a short time before he was overtaken by the breakaway again. Majka won the mountain classification again, followed by Thomas Voeckler and Steve Morabito. After a short descent, the last climb started again, the arrival of the Hors Catégorie at Finhaut-Emosson . The leading group fell apart, with Majka, Pantano and Sakarin in front. Sakarin shook off Majka and then Pantano with two attempts and drove the last kilometers of the stage alone in the front.

The stage win went to Ilnur Sakarin, who made up 55 seconds on Jarlinson Pantano. Pantano was second ahead of Majka, who collected another 32 mountain points and thus had a total of 173 points and 83 points ahead of Thomas De Gendt (LTS).

In the field launched Daniel Martin (EQS) the first attack, it was followed by a tightening pace of Alejandro Valverde (MOV). Finally, Richie Porte (BMC) entered , only the overall leader Chris Froome (SKY) could follow. Bauke Mollema (TFS) and Nairo Quintana (MOV) fell behind. In between were Adam Yates (OBE), Romain Bardet (ALM), Fabio Aru (AST) and Louis Meintjes (LAM).

Froome finished with Porte 7:59 minutes behind Sakarin, Yates lost eight seconds to Froome, Bardet eleven, Aru and Meintjes 19 and Quintana 28 seconds. The overall leader was able to save time from all competitors and was now 2:27 minutes ahead of Bauke Mollema (TFS), who crossed the finish line 40 seconds behind Froome.
