The 18th stage of the 2016 Tour de France was a 17-kilometer mountain time trial that was held on July 21, 2016. It led from Sallanches to Megève . There were three split times after 6.5, 10 and 13.5 kilometers. There was a difference in altitude of about 500 meters between the start and destination, the highest point of this stage was reached on the 1219 meter high Côte des Chozeaux .
Race course
As on the 13th stage , the time trial began with the start of Irish Sam Bennett (BOA), who was in last place in the overall standings before the start, four hours, ten minutes and two seconds behind Chris Froome (SKY).
The Frenchman Nicolas Edet (COF) delivered the first, somewhat longer, best time . After that, Jérôme Coppel (IAM) was a bit more in the lead and also the first driver to complete the 17 kilometers in under 32 minutes. Coppel was then replaced at the top of the race by Ion Izagirre (MOV). Thomas De Gendt (LTS) was faster then , before Tom Dumoulin (TGA) set a best time of 31:04 minutes, which could only be beaten by the eventual stage winner Froome.
Louis Meintjes (LAM) started as the first driver of the top ten in the overall standings . Like Joaquim Rodríguez (KAT), he managed a good time trial. Both were able to improve by one place in the overall standings, Meintjes passed Daniel Martin (EQS) from 10th to 9th place, Rodríguez ousted the Czech Roman Kreuziger (AST) from eleventh to twelfth place.
Richie Porte (BMC) was nine seconds ahead of Tom Dumoulin in the first split, but could not hold the lead over him and finally crossed the finish line nine seconds behind. Fabio Aru (AST) crossed the finish line at the same time as Porte . Romain Bardet (ALM) drove a little slower in the first section, but was able to improve towards the end of the time trial and crossed the finish line in fourth behind Dumoulin, Aru and Porte.
The overall winner co-favorite Nairo Quintana (MOV) once again lost a lot of time, especially compared to Chris Froome, who started last. Adam Yates (OBE) and Bauke Mollema (TFS) also fell far behind Dumoulin, Porte, Aru and also behind De Gendt, Izagirre, Rodríguez and Coppel.
After Chris Froome was clearly behind Dumoulin at the first split time, he continued to take time from him and was already 13 seconds ahead by the third time measurement. By the end of the race, the overall leader managed to extend the lead to 21 seconds and thus win the second tour stage in 2016.
With the victory in the mountain time trial, Froome also increased the gap to all direct competitors for the overall standings, Bauke Mollema was now 3:52 minutes behind the Brit in second place.
For the fastest time on the Côte de Domancy , Richie Porte won the Prix Bernard Hinault endowed with 5,000 euros .
