In the 2016 Tour de France , a total of 58 mountain ratings have to be mastered.
Of the 58 mountain ratings, 18 are in category 4, 12 in the third category, 7 in category 2, 14 in the first category and 7 climbs are assigned to the hors category. The division into categories is interesting for the evaluation of the dotted jersey . There is one point for the winner of a mountain classification in the fourth category, and two or five points for mountain winners in categories 3 and 2. The first on a mountain in the first category receives ten points, while hors-catégorie climbs earn the winner 25 points in the mountain classification.

The longest ascent is the one to Port d'Envalira (22.6 kilometers), while the 900 meter long classification on the Côte de l'Ermitage is the shortest of its kind. The steepest average ascent is the 15.8-kilometer approach to Mont Ventoux , the flattest is the ascent to Col de Neronne .
