The 7th stage of the Tour de France 2016 was held on July 8, 2016. The mountain stage led over 162.5 kilometers from L'Isle-Jourdain to Lac de Payolle . There was a mountain classification in the 4th and 1st category as well as an intermediate sprint in Sarrancolin after 137 kilometers.

Race course

After the start at 1:10 p.m., Mark Cavendish (DDD) and Peter Sagan (TNK) tried to break away at 1:20 p.m., which was immediately followed by ten other drivers. The group did not get away from the peloton and around 2:09 pm the attempt was over and the field caught up. A new breakaway group with this time nine riders formed, more riders were added until finally a group of 29 riders had separated from the peloton. The outliers were able to extend their lead to five to six minutes.

The drivers were: Wassil Kiryjenka ( SKY ), Gorka Izaguirre ( MOV ), Vincenzo Nibali ( AST ), Alexei Luzenko ( AST ), Jan Bakelants ( ALM ), Alexis Vuillermoz ( ALM ), Paul Martens ( TLJ ), Fabian Cancellara ( TSF ), Jasper Stuyven ( TSF ), Oliver Naesen ( IAM ), Matti Breschel ( CDT ), Alex Howes ( CDT ), Sebastian Langeveld ( CDT ), in the yellow jersey Greg Van Avermaet ( BMC ), Stephen Cummings ( DDD ), Simon Geschke ( TGA ), Paul Voß ( BOA ), Kristijan Đurasek ( LAM ), Ángel Vicioso ( KAT ), Jurgen Roelandts ( LTS ), Sylvain Chavanel ( DEN ), Antoine Duchesne ( DEN ), Tony Martin ( EQS ), Daniel Navarro ( COF ), Borut Božič ( COF ), Luis Angel Maté ( COF ), Daryl Impey ( OBE ), Pierre-Luc Périchon ( FVC ).

In preparation for the intermediate sprint, three drivers separated from the breakaway group: Matti Breschel (CDT), Antoine Duchesne (DEN) and Daniel Navarro (COF). Stephen Cummings (DDD) bridged the gap of about 10 seconds to the group of three and the new group of four only tried to increase the distance to the pursuers. Before the intermediate sprint, Stephen Cummings pulled away and won the intermediate sprint.

The ascent to Col d'Aspin began shortly after the intermediate sprint in Sarrancolin at 4:30 p.m. Around 4:40 p.m. there were several groups of drivers in front of the peloton: Stephen Cummings at the front, about a minute behind Cummings a group of three of Vincenzo Nibali (AST), Daryl Impey (OBE) and Daniel Navarro (COF). The remaining outliers were in another group about 2 minutes behind the lead or were caught by the peloton, which was about 4:20 minutes behind at the time. Other riders drove behind the peloton.

Such a devil's rag collapsed.

The group of drivers around Vincenzo Nibali (AST) did not succeed in catching up with Stephen Cummings and Nibali even fell out of the chasing group. Daryl Impey and Daniel Navarro kept the gap of about a minute and in the sprint it was decided who crossed the finish line in second and who in third behind Cummings. Behind the fourth Vincenzo Nibali, the yellow jersey wearer Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) crossed the finish line in fifth and was therefore able to extend his lead in the overall standings. Like Steve Cummings, he was also able to make up points in the mountain classification.

Vincenzo Nibali was voted the most combative driver by the jury.
