The 3rd stage of the Tour de France 2016 took place on July 4th, 2016. It led over 223.5 kilometers from Granville to Angers . There was a mountain classification in the 4th category and an intermediate sprint in Bouillé-Ménard after 171 kilometers. The flat stage finish resulted in a mass sprint that was won by Mark Cavendish .

Race course

From the start, Armindo attacked Fonseca and began an escape as a soloist. The French from the Fortuneo-Vital Concept team also won the first mountain classification after 25.5 kilometers. Since there is less danger from a single outlier, the field let Fonseca go, leaving him up to eleven minutes ahead. With 90 kilometers to go, Thomas Voeckler (DEN) set out to chase Fonseca, who was still alone in the front and still had a lead of 5:30 minutes. After the two merged a little later, they continued their escape as a duo.

Voeckler's catching up to the top of the race accelerated the race, which had been leisurely until then. At the intermediate sprint, both were only one minute ahead. Fonseca won the points without a fight ahead of Voeckler, Marcel Kittel (EQS) was the fastest in the field . Eight kilometers from the finish, both were finally overtaken and the sprinter teams took control of the field. Mark Cavendish (DDD) prevailed against André Greipel (LTS) in a mass sprint decided by photo finish . Bryan Coquard (DEN) came in third ahead of Peter Sagan (SVK), who lost his green jersey to Cavendish but maintained the lead in the overall standings. Likewise remained Jasper Stuyven (TFS) and Julian Alaphilippe (EQS) leader in the mining and youth classification. Thomas Voeckler was honored as the most combative driver of the stage.
