The 9th stage of the Tour de France 2016 was held on July 10, 2016, 197 riders started. The mountain stage led over 184.5 kilometers from Vielha e Mijaran to Andorra Arcalis . There was a mountain classification of the 2nd, three of the 1st and one of the Hors Catégorie as well as an intermediate sprint in Andorra la Vella after 138 kilometers. The stage started in Spain and ended in Andorra .

Race course

During the drive to the summit of Port de la Bonaigua (at 19 kilometers) there were constant attacks and new groups were formed. The group around the wearer of the yellow jersey, Christopher Froome , was about a minute behind the top of the race, a group of about 20 drivers. The lead of this breakaway group over the peloton was three minutes at the beginning of the ascent to Port del Cantò and then increased to over ten minutes.

Thomas De Gendt (LTS) drove out of the breakaway group and secured the most points in the mountain classification on the Côte de la Comella with a few seconds gap , he was then able to extend his lead and was the first to start the climb with a gap of 40 seconds Col de Beixalis . But then he broke in and was overtaken by the following group of nine drivers, which shortly afterwards increased to ten drivers: Thibaut Pinot (FDJ), Mathias Frank (IAM), George Bennett (TLJ), Rafał Majka (TNK), Daniel Navarro (COF), Tom Dumoulin (TGA), Diego Rosa (AST), Winner Anacona (MOV), Jesús Herrada (MOV) and Rui Costa (LAM). The distance between the peloton and the leaders was only eight minutes.

In the leading group there were many attacks shortly before the climb to Andorra Arcalis, but only Tom Dumoulin (TGA) managed to leave the group and then get a lead of about a minute on the wet road. Later, only Rui Costa (LAM) and then Rafał Majka (TNK) were also able to break away and position themselves together behind Tom Dumoulin (TGA).

The rain intensified and hail set in when the attacks in the peloton between Christopher Froome (SKY), Nairo Quintana (MOV) and other riders began five kilometers from the finish . The two of them and Adam Yates (OBE) reached the finish line at the same time, followed by Daniel Martin (EQS), Richie Porte (BMC) and Jesús Herrada (MOV) two seconds later .

In the fight for the yellow jersey, the time gap between Christopher Froome (SKY) and Nairo Quintana (MOV) (+ 23 s) remained unchanged, Adam Yates (OBE) (+ 16 s) could not improve either, while Daniel's gap increased Martin (EQS) (+ 19 s) increased by two seconds to the top.

In the points ratings for the green jersey , Peter Sagan (TNK) was able to improve on the leader Mark Cavendish (DDD). In the battle for the mountain jersey, Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) managed to gain 50 points and thus to be in first place, Rafał Majka (TNK) now just behind and the stage winner Tom Dumoulin (TGA) was able to position himself in third place. The jury chose him as the most combative driver of this stage.

In the team classification, the Movistar team improved from third to first place.
