Markel Irízar Aranburu (born February 5, 1980 in Oñati / Gipuzkoa ) is a former Spanish cyclist .
Athletic career
Irízar began his professional career in 2004 with the Basque cycling team Euskaltel-Euskadi . He won the Tour Down Under mountain classification for this team . In 2010 he switched to Team RadioShack and drove for this team and its successor teams in the following years. In his first year with this UCI ProTeam , he won a stage Tour du Poitou Charentes and in 2011 the overall ranking of the Ruta del Sol . At the 2013 UCI Road World Championships he finished fifth in the individual time trial , seventh UCI Road World Championships in 2014 , tenth in 2015 and twelfth in 2017 .
In the course of his cycling career, Irízar contested 21 major country tours . In 2019 he drove his last race with the Clásica San Sebastián , which he finished 75th.
Private
In 2002 Irízar was treated for testicular cancer and was still symptom-free after ten years.
