Rigoberto Urán Urán (born January 26, 1987 in Urrao ) is a Colombian racing cyclist .

Career

Rigoberto Urán was Colombian champion in the junior class in 2005 in road racing and on the track in the disciplines single pursuit , points race and scratch . In 2006 he drove for the Professional Continental Team Tenax . At the road cycling world championships in Salzburg he was 25th in the time trial of the U23 class and 31st in the road race. In 2007 he drove for the Swedish ProTeam Unibet.com . In 2008 he moved to the Spanish first division Caisse d'Epargne . From 2011 to 2013 he was part of the Sky ProCycling team. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , he finished second in the road race behind Alexander Vinokurov . His first stage win in a Grand Tour came with the first mountain finish of the Giro d'Italia 2013 . This success also enabled him to work his way up to second place and thus stand on the podium for the first time in a Grand Tour. A year later he was second overall at the Giro d'Italia 2014 , this time behind his compatriot Nairo Quintana. In autumn 2015 he won a one-day race of the UCI WorldTour for the first time with the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec . At the Tour de France 2017 he won the 9th stage in the high mountains from Nantua to Chambéry in the finish sprint of a six-man leading group, although he could not change gears due to a gearshift defect and finished the tour in second overall 54 seconds behind Chris Froome . At the Tour de France 2018 , Uran gave up after the 11th stage due to fall injuries that he sustained on the cobblestone stretches of the 9th stage .
