Louie N. Psihoyos (born April 15, 1957 in Dubuque , Iowa ) is an American photographer and director of documentaries . He won an Oscar in 2010 for his film The Bay .

Life

Psihoyos was born in 1957 to Greek immigrants in Dubuque , Iowa . As a teenager he was interested in photography and took pictures for the local newspaper Telegraph Herald . At the age of 17 he took on a small role as Sylvester Stallone's wedding photographer in the film FIST - A man goes his way . He later studied photojournalism at the University of Missouri . During his studies he worked a. a. for the Los Angeles Times .

From 1980 to 1997 he worked for National Geographic . He has won numerous awards for his work, including first places in the World Press Contest , the Hearst Awards, and the National Press Photographers Association . Some of his works have been exhibited in museums, including museums in New York and Washington and the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne . He has also photographed for numerous other newspapers, including GEO , TIME , New York Times Magazine and many others. In 1994 he published the book Hunting Dinosaurs , in which he reported on his travels to dinosaur sites. Because he rediscovered the bones of paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope in a museum archive , he gained brief fame including a cover story on the Wall Street Journal . The dinosaur egg Baby Louie , discovered by Charlie Magovern and photographed by Psihoyos for National Geographic , was named after him in 1996 .

In 2005, Psihoyos co-founded the Oceanic Preservation Society .

For the documentary The Bay of animal rights activist Richard O'Barry , which documents the annual mass killing of around 2,000 dolphins in the Japanese Bay of Taiji and directed Psyhoyos, he and producer Fisher Stevens won an Oscar in the category at the 2010 Academy Awards Best documentary . The film won other prizes at the largest documentary film festival in Amsterdam , the Directors Guild of America Award , the Sundance Film Festival and at various film festivals in Galway , Toronto , Nantucket , Newport Beach , Seattle , Silver Spring as well as the Sydney Film Festival and Stockholm International Film Festival .

Psihoyos is currently (as of October 2012) working on the documentary The Singing Planet .
