Carolin No is a singer / songwriter duo and consists of the musician couple Carolin Obieglo (born March  17, 1979 as Carolin Evi Weißenberg in Würzburg ) and Andreas Obieglo (born  April 26, 1978 in Deggendorf ). After stints in Berlin and the USA, the couple moved to Waldbüttelbrunn near Würzburg.

history

Carolin and Andreas met in 1999 during their studies at the University of Music in Würzburg. They have been married to each other since 2008. The duo has been performing under the name Carolin No since 2007, under which it has released six studio albums, numerous singles and two live recordings. The two named themselves after the song Caroline, no by Brian Wilson , to be found on the Beach Boys album Pet Sounds.

In 2010 the duo won the Hanns Seidel Foundation's award for young song poets . a. In 2011 and 2016 at the Festival Songs on a summer evening at Kloster Banz with Reinhard Mey , Konstantin Wecker , Hannes Wader and Viva Voce , who also accompanied them on their 2011 tour. In 2010, the duo, previously based in Würzburg, moved to Berlin. Carolin No then had other major appearances in the ZDF morning magazine , in the Rundschau of Bavarian TV and live with Ray Wilson and Joan Armatrading as tour support. In 2012, the two had their first appearances outside of the German-speaking area (in the Czech Republic and Denmark). A live DVD was released in 2012 from an open-air concert at the harbor summer in Würzburg. Her song Hear the Silence accompanies the light and sound show in the fairytale dome of the Feengrotten exhibition mine .

The duo has been performing live since 2015, both as a pair and as a band. In this, the duo is expanded to include the musicians Tilmann Wehle on cello and Christian Kraus on drums. In 2011 the duo was supported by cellist Tilmann Wehle in the live implementation of their album Loveland . The promotional photos for this album come from Thorsten Wingenfelder , the guitarist and songwriter of the band Fury in the Slaughterhouse , which dissolved in 2008 . The live concept of the band show included films and visuals that are projected synchronized with the music. The duo shows are purely acoustic. The 2012 single Ventura CA was created in collaboration with Jesse Siebenberg, son of Supertramp drummer Bob Siebenberg.

Carolin No have been producing their albums on their own since 2009. Her album Loveland , released in 2011, was created almost exclusively in her apartment in Berlin at the time. Cellist Rebecca Carrington and former Robbie Williams background singer Colin Brown contributed to this. Until 2015 the lyrics are mostly in English and often autobiographical. On the album Loveland , they also process their experiences of a several-month road trip through the USA, which they undertook in 2009 and which they found formative both personally and professionally. The album was discussed in Spiegel and Stern.

In addition to Carolin No, Andreas Obieglo realized his instrumental piano solo project Lieder in 2010 , a CD with his versions of old folk songs. Konstantin Wecker wrote an accompanying text for the booklet. In the winter of 2012, Obieglo released his second solo album, Advent , with interpretations of traditional Christmas carols.

In September 2013, Carolin and Andreas Obieglo released their third Carolin No-Studio album Favorite Sin, which was supported for the first time in parallel by a nationwide tour and various radio interviews with the duo. In October 2014, the fourth Carolin No studio album will follow, Backstage. The recordings for this album were made between September 2013 and September 2014, most of them not in the studio, but in various hotel and living rooms during their 2013 “Favorite Sin” tour and the duo's stay in the USA in summer 2014. In May 2016 The fifth studio album was released, Honestly, on which it presented songs with German lyrics for the first time. In the summer of 2016, the duo toured among others supporting Suzanne Vega .

In 2017, the duo and the publicist Rainer Oberthür will publish a book with a music CD. On the CD, Carolin.no personally reflects the themes of the children's letters presented in the book in songs and texts. In the same year, the completely acoustic duo album You & I is released, Carolin.no performed, among other things, at the opening concert of the harbor summer in their hometown together with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Würzburg. In 2019, a continuation of the piano solo project by Andreas Obieglo will be released under the title Lieder II , again with new versions of traditional folk tunes and an accompanying text by Chris Beier . Carolin No announce a new studio album for autumn of the year.

Style and Influences

Carolin No's style is described as minimalist pop, especially at the beginning of the duo, but developed live, then with the release of the second studio album Loveland in the direction of singer / songwriter and shows influences from blues, jazz, country and electro. Nevertheless, the albums released so far also contain open song forms, free of the usual structures. According to her own information, Carolin No is reluctant to commit to musical role models. Due to the education, the many influences and the broad musical taste of the two, the complete work is difficult to classify. Electronic soundscapes meet acoustic slide guitars, spherical textures meet concrete beats, minimalist songs stand alongside arrangements with blues and gospel sounds. Carolin No's albums are released by the Bremen record label Fuego .

Andreas Obieglo began his training at the Musical College in Regensburg and then studied piano, composition and electronic music production at the Würzburg University of Music with Tine Schneider , Eva-Maria May and Chris Beier. He plays the piano, acoustic and electric guitars including various slide guitars, bass, accordion, violin and various percussion instruments.
