Roger Stein (born March 29, 1975 in Männedorf on Lake Zurich ) is a Swiss-German author , musician , songwriter , singer-songwriter and composer .

Life

Roger Stein grew up as an only child in Männedorf on Lake Zurich after the early death of his father and received his first piano lessons at the age of eight. He wrote his first song on a ukulele when he was six years old . After graduating from the Stadelhofen Cantonal School in Zurich , he studied German language and literature for a semester at the University of Zurich and then moved to Vienna

He completed a classical singing course at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Adelheid Schmid-Hornich as well as a degree in theater studies , German literature and philosophy at the University of Vienna and did his doctorate with Ulf Birbaumer and Wynfrid Kriegleder on The German Dirnenlied in the literary cabaret of 1901 –1933 ( Böhlau Verlag 1st edition 2006; 2nd edition 2007). 

During his studies he took part in numerous opera productions and plays, worked as a gag writer for comedy television formats and played the title role in the play Der nackte Schubert . He wrote and composed songs, chansons and stage music for numerous cabaret and stage artists and set a. a. also poems by Else Lasker-Schüler for string quartet and speaking voice.

With his own songs he appeared in bars, clubs and on cabaret stages - u. a. in the infamous Broadway Piano Bar, where he also met Sandra Kreisler , with whom he founded the music formation Wortfront in 2006 .

Wortfront's debut album, Songs of a Postmodern Asshole , which was released on the Extraplatte label , won the German Record Critics' Prize (03/2006) straight away . In addition to text and music, Roger Stein is also responsible for Wortfront as the artistic producer.

In 2012, Roger Stein performed for the first time as a soloist at the legendary songwriter festival Songs on a summer evening at Kloster Banz . In 2013 he released his first solo CD Lieder ohne mich on the label Sturm und Klang by Konstantin Wecker , and in 2018 his second solo album Alles vor dem Aber - also with Sturm und Klang . In the same year he published his volume of poetry "Business-Lyrik - Komische Poesie am Verge des Absurd".

In 2019 he appeared for the third time at Lieder auf Banz - this time not solo, but with a band.

Roger Stein lives in Berlin , Vienna and Zurich .
