Colin Wilkie (born May 9, 1934 in London ) is a British singer-songwriter who has lived in Zabergäu in Germany since the 1960s . Together with his wife Shirley Hart (born December 8, 1932 in East London) he formed the folk duo Colin Wilkie & Shirley Hart .

Life

From the age of 18 Colin Wilkie played drums in jazz and dance bands as well as skiffle and pop groups in England ; later he found himself playing the guitar as an autodidact . He opened his own folk club in Bromley in 1960 with his friend John Glen. Guests included Alex Campbell , Redd Sullivan and Martin Winsor. In 1960 he met the English folk singer Shirley Hart at the Sutton Folk Club. Together they made street music in France and played in the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden and Switzerland. After all, they stayed in Germany from 1966, when Colin was asked to compose melodies for Franz Josef Degenhardt for the piece Leben und let Leben for some texts. Producer Peter Palitzsch suggested that Shirley and Colin sing some songs on stage themselves. The play (with Hannelore Hoger ) ran for a year and a half in the Stuttgart State Theater , and so the two settled in Germany. After a short time in Stuttgart , the couple settled in Stockheim and later in Pfaffenhofen . Colin Wilkie is one of the initiators of the Pfaffenhofen Artists' Meeting, which was founded in 1992.

Wilkie wrote his first songs for the pop group The Moonbeams in the late 1950s . From an early age he was politically active, for example in the Easter marches . He was friends with the American songwriter Phil Ochs , whose songs he admires very much. The folk duo Colin Wilkie & Shirley Hart performed at almost all Burg-Waldeck festivals , together with Hein and Oss , Reinhard Mey , Franz Josef Degenhardt, Hanns Dieter Hüsch and many others. Wilkie wrote English texts for Werner Lämmerhirt , Konstantin Wecker and Pe Werner and wrote many songs that were adopted by other singers, for example by Hannes Wader , Le Clou and Liederjan . His most commonly recorded songs by other artists are Icy Acres and You Won't Get Me Down In Your Mine ; his best-known song was One More City (the version translated and sung by Hannes Wader is Manche Stadt ). For the 1996 CD I Wish I'd Written That Song. A Tribute to Colin Wilkie , numerous artists sing his songs, for example Ray Austin , Julian Dawson , Le Clou , Franz Josef Degenhardt, Joana , Liederjan, Reinhard Mey and Bill Ramsey .

From 1974 to 1981 Wilkie presented the half-hour program Colin's Folk Club on Ö3 every Sunday evening , in which he presented folk music.

In 1969 their son Vincent Wilkie was born, who produced the CDs I Wish I'd Written That Song and Empty Chairs , among others . Between 1995 and 2000 he appeared as Lotte Ohm. , meanwhile he works under the name Instant Wilkie as a musician, DJ and web designer.

After vocal cord problems that occurred with Shirley Hart, Wilkie now goes on tour alone (or together with other musicians such as Klaus Weiland , Werner Lämmerhirt and Wizz Jones ).
