Wallace Collection

Wallace Collection was a band founded in Belgium in 1968 that was one of the first to integrate string instruments into a rock combo. The group consisted of two members of the Belgian National Orchestra, Raymond Vincent (violin) and Jacques Hamotte (cello), the jazz pianist Marc Herouet and the more pop-oriented rhythm group with Christian Janssen (bass), Freddy Nieuland (drums) and Sylveer van Holmen ( Guitar). The band played a synthesis of pop, rock and string elements.

The group got a record deal with EMI . With the song Daydream from the first album Laughing Cavalier (recorded in Abbey Road Studios with advice from George Martin ) the band achieved a hit that reached number one in the charts in twenty countries. Other titles that became successful in various countries were Dear Beloved Secretary (1969), Fly Me to the Earth (1969), Serenade (1970) and Stay (1971).

In 1970 and 1971 Wallace Collection gave concerts in Europe and was also successful in Mexico and Brazil, where they filled large arenas. The composition of film music complemented the overall work of the group. In 1972 creative crises, the stress of touring and also the different musical ideas led to the group breaking up.
