Antonella Ruggiero stayed with the group Matia Bazar until 1989. After a seven-year hiatus, she made her debut as a soloist in 1996 with the album Libera , which was clearly influenced by her long travels, especially in India.

She was also successful at this restart, as well as two years later at the competition of the Sanremo Festival , where she took second place with Amore lontanissimo . The song also received the award for the best arrangement. It also appeared on her second album, Registrazioni moderne , for which she went platinum. In 1999 Antonella Ruggiero performed with Non ti dimentico (se non ci fossero le nuvole) at the Sanremo Festival and came second again. This song, written together with her husband Roberto Colombo, is dedicated to Aldo Stellita, a former art and life companion (founder, author and bassist of Matia Bazar), who died in 1998. Her third solo album was released immediately after the Sanremo Festival: Sospesa .

Two celebrities contributed to it: Ennio Morricone composed And will you love me , and the singer Giovanni Lindo Ferretti, known in Italy, wrote the piece: Di perle e inverni , together with Ruggiero and Roberto Colombo .

In November 2001, Luna Crescente (Sacrarmonia) was released , an album in collaboration with the string quartet Arké Quartet. This album is a collection of sacred pieces from different eras and styles. With this music, Antonella Ruggiero and the Arké Quartet went on a long tour with concerts in churches, basilicas and theaters in Italy and other countries. In 2003 she reached ninth place with Di un amore at the Sanremo Festival, in 2005 she won first place there in the category of women with Echi d'infinito and reached third place overall.

In 2004 Egea Records released the DVD / CD Sacrarmonia Live Il Viaggio , a recording of the Sacrarmonia tour with already published and new songs, inspired by Christianity and other religions. The DVD was recorded on July 13th in Bologna in Piazza Santo Stefano and had its world premiere at the Brooklyn International Film Festival in New York.

In 2005, after the success at the Sanremo Festival, a project with two choirs followed, the Coro S. Ilario di Rovereto and the Coro Valle dei Laghi di Padergnone, both from Trentino. Under the title Echi d'infinito , they have performed new interpretations of well-known songs from the Alps and their own a cappella pieces.

In addition to pop songs that she presents at the Sanremo festivals, Antonella Ruggiero has been touring various programs in recent years: Sacrarmonia , sacred music from all over the world, Omaggio ad Amalia Rodrigues , dedicated to Portuguese fado and its most famous performer, Quattro passi via Broadway with the most famous pieces from Broadway musicals (Tonight, Over The Rainbow, Summertime), Stralunato Recital , a kind of “Best of Antonella Ruggiero”, in which she sings her great successes live.

In 2007 she performed in Sanremo with Canzone fra le guerre (written with Cristian Carrara) and took tenth place overall. On the third evening of the competition, in which all artists perform with guests, Ruggiero performed this song with the choirs Valle dei Laghi and S. Ilario in an a cappella version. Since then, the program Canzoni fra le guerre has been part of her repertoire, which includes famous Italian songs from the period between the two world wars. Antonella Ruggiero has also performed several times in Germany.

When she sang with Matia Bazar, she was often in Germany, the hit Ti sento (1985) made the band famous in Germany. On September 5th, 2005 Antonella returned to Germany to sing in the synagogue on Rykestrasse in Berlin . Here the Italian singer sang Jewish songs (Lieder Ebraici) in Yiddish , English and Ladin . The concert took place as part of the 5th European Day of Jewish Culture and in the presence of the chairman of the Jewish Community of Rome, Leone Paserman.

In 2009 the German techno band Scooter released a cover version of Ti Sento , for which Antonella Ruggiero contributed the vocals. Ruggiero can also be seen in the accompanying music video as an opera singer who is assassinated during one of her performances.
