The Italian province of Gorizia (German Görz , Slovenian Gorica , Furlanisch Gurize ) was a province in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region until September 30, 2017 and had 139,439 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2017) on 466 km². The capital of the province was Gorizia .
As in the case of the other three provinces of Friuli Venezia Giulia ( Pordenone , Trieste and Udine ), which were also abolished as independent institutions, this former province also continues to exist as an administrative district of decentralized state administrations or as a statistical area.
The province had a large proportion of ethnic Slovenes , so Slovenian was an additional official language. The province also included the seaside resort of Grado , which was the seat of a patriarch in the early Middle Ages .
geography
The former province lies partly in the Venetian Plain and partly in the Karst .
In the former province there is the well-known DOC wine Collio . The most famous municipality in the wine-growing region is Cormons .
