The Collio Goriziano or simply Collio , Slovenian Goriška brda or just Brda , Furlanian Cuei (all respectively 'hills') or German: the Görzer Hügelland , is a wine-growing region within the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the Slovenian region of Goriška . Cormons and Gorizia / Nova Gorica are the most important places in this region, the mountainous region is the Slovenian municipality of Brda (Collio) .

Cultivation

The Collio area stretches between Gorizia (Gorica / Görz) on the Isonzo  (Soča) along the Slovenian-Italian border to the northwest to around Mernico in the Judrio valley , southeast of Cividale . The actual hill country, at the foot of Sabotin  ( 609  m ), Strmec  ( 501  m ), Nad Rabom  ( 632  m ) and Korada  ( 632  m ), still belongs to Slovenia, and the edge of the hill belongs to Italy. These mountains form the upstream chain of the Kambreško  (Sankt Gregorsberg) between the Judrio and the breakthrough valley of the lower Soča ( Spodnja Soška dolina ).

The river Judrio forms the border to the neighboring DOC Colli Orientali del Friuli . This border is historically justified, since the Collio belonged to Austria until after the First World War, the Colli Orientali del Friuli only until 1868. Both the grape varieties and the soil are largely similar. The central area, however, is in the hills around Cormons .

Brda wine region

On the Slovenian side, Chardonnay and Sauvignon , Beli pinot ( Pinot Blanc ), Sivi pinot ( Pinot Gris ) and various Cabernets are particularly grown. The local specialty is the Rebula , an autochthonous variety that only occurs here and in the Vipava Valley for a sparkling white wine. The fruity pikolit and furlanski tokaj (Friulian tokai ) are also known. The most common red wine is a beautiful Merlot . To the south is the Isontino with the wine-growing region ( Friuli Isonzo ).

generation

Due to the loss of territory in World War II, the Collio was reduced to just 1,600  hectares of vineyards. Since 1968 the wine has had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC), which was last updated on March 7, 2014.

In 2017, 64,803 hl of DOC wine were produced.

Two types of blending wines are produced: "Collio Goriziano Bianco" (also with the distinction Riserva ) and "Collio Goriziano Rosso". These wines must be made from the grape varieties approved for this region, in any proportion. Exception: Müller-Thurgau and Traminer may only be added up to a proportion of 15%.

The grape variety mentioned must be at least 85% in the almost single-origin wines. A maximum of 15% other analogous grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region may be added.
