action

Claire and Laura are childhood best friends. They are celebrating a double wedding, Laura is soon pregnant and gives birth to a girl. However, shortly after her daughter's baptism, she dies of an incurable disease. At the memorial service, Claire promises to take care of her childhood friend's daughter and husband for her entire life. However, Claire suffers greatly from Laura's early death and also has to discover that her husband David, apparently in order to fulfill both the father and mother role of his daughter, slips into the role of his deceased wife. Claire lies to her husband Gilles and is unsure whether she has fallen in love with David or the role of her childhood friend Laura, which he now publicly takes on as a transvestite Virginia . A secret meeting between Claire and David in a hotel room ends tragically: David / Virginia is hit by a car while wearing women's clothes and is seriously injured. He survives the accident but only wakes up from his coma when Claire puts on him feminine clothes in the hospital. In the final picture, seven years later, one sees Virginia united with his daughter, who is now school-age, and the pregnant Claire. The future of the new family and the fate of Claire's husband Gilles remain open.

background

In an interview, François Ozon explains where the idea for the film came from.

“I read this short story over 20 years ago and first made a very faithful script for a short film from it. Unfortunately, at the time, I couldn't find funding or the right people, so I dropped the project. I often thought of this story afterwards. She was chasing me. "

criticism

“In any case, one is inclined to read this French film against the background of the bitter struggle for interpretation that has been going on in France since 2013 over marriage and family. The unusual family that a new friend ends with points to the future. "
