Under the Sand is a French feature film by François Ozon from 2000.

action

Like every year, Marie and Jean spend their holidays on the coast. Suddenly Jean has disappeared on the beach, an immediately initiated search is fruitless. Marie clings to the thought that Jean is still alive.

In Paris, Marie's everyday life begins again in her job as a lecturer. Marie's best friend introduces her to a new man: the publisher Vincent. Although she gets into a relationship with him, she cannot come to terms with Jean's death. When the police contacted her that a body had been found, she did not react. By chance she is confronted with the fact that Jean was severely depressed and was taking medication. His mother then reveals her assessment that Jean, bored of his life and his marriage, used this route to start his life all over again. Only now does Marie decide to go to the place of disappearance. And although the corpse has meanwhile been clearly identified as her husband, a detail was the watch that Marie had exactly described, she now claims to the police that the corpse is not her husband and the watch shown is not her husband's. So she can keep her illusion.

background

Under the sand , François Ozons was the first part of a “trilogy about grief”; the second part was published in 2005 under the title The time that remains . With the return to the sea , the last part followed in 2009.

criticism

"The film lives entirely from its grandiose leading actress, but also from the precision and intimacy with which it accompanies her almost as a documentary."
