Life

Marina de Van, the daughter of a musicologist and a lawyer, attended the Lycée Henri IV in Paris and then studied philosophy at the Sorbonne . De Van, who actually wanted to become a sculptor, began studying directing at the La fémis film school in 1993 , which she completed in 1997. For the short film Bien sous tous rapports , which she made at Fémis in 1996, she received, among other things, the jury award at the Festival of the Munich Film Schools and the Critics' Prize at the short film festival in Clermont-Ferrand . She then worked several times with François Ozon , whom she had met at Fémis. Under his direction, she starred in François Ozone's short films (1997) and sitcoms (1998). For the film drama Unter dem Sand (2000) and the star-studded crime comedy 8 Women (2002) she wrote the script with Ozon. Her work on 8 women earned her a nomination for the Chlotrudis Award and the César .

Filming of Do not Look Back - shadows of the past in Bercy in 2007

With In My Skin , a slasher drama about a woman who mutilates herself and eats her own meat as a result of an accident, de Van made her feature film debut in 2002, for which she appeared as director, screenwriter and leading actress. With the film, she wanted to capture her obsession with her own body, which began with a broken leg in her childhood, on the screen. Other short films followed, such as The Walk (2007), which was nominated for the César. For the thriller Don't Look Back - Shadows of the Past (2009) about a woman who transforms into another, she was able to win two internationally known stars, Sophie Marceau and Monica Bellucci, as leading actresses. The film, on which de Van had worked for seven years, premiered outside the competition at the 62nd Cannes International Film Festival in 2009 , but was not received very positively by the critics there. It also turned out to be a financial failure.

De Van was temporarily addicted to drugs and alcohol, which led to hospitalization and rehab. She processed her experiences in the book Stéréoscopie , published in 2013 . In the same year, the horror film Dark Touch , which she directed, was released about a girl who survives as the only inhabitant of a house that has come alive and murdered. The shooting of the film took place in Ireland and Sweden because de Van did not get the necessary permission from the authorities in France to be allowed to shoot the horror film with children.

Her brother Adrien de Van (* 1973) works as an actor and was featured several times as such in his sister's films, including in Im finsteren Walde , de Van's adaptation of the Charles Perrault fairy tale The Little Thumble , which was published in 2011 in the Section Orizzonti (German: Horizonte) was presented at the 68th Venice International Film Festival . Her brother Thomas de Van also appeared in small roles in Bien sous tous rapports and In My Skin .
