action

The French journalist Jeanne wants to record her own biography with her first novel. However, due to an accident in her childhood, she cannot remember the time before her eighth birthday. When she witnesses a car accident, Jeanne begins to cry. She then picks up her son and daughter from her mother Nadia. While she is preparing dinner for the children and her husband Teo at home, she films Teo with a camera. When they later look at the recordings together, Jeanne notices that the dining table is set differently than usual. Teo and the children are amazed at their observation. The next morning, Jeanne is still confused and therefore looks at older photos of the apartment, which only make her even more insecure. Her surroundings change more and more before her eyes. Her children and Teo also seem increasingly strange to her.

One evening Jeanne looks at herself in the mirror and is shocked when suddenly half of her face shows another woman. Teo tries to comfort her. When they sleep together, Jeanne panics and pushes Teo, who seems strange to her, away. She eventually goes to a psychiatrist and describes her obvious delusions to him. In order to come to terms with herself again, she wants to take a break. She seeks refuge with her mother Nadia, but Nadia, who likes to play poker, is currently in a casino. Jeanne finds her there and asks her to go with her. While she is waiting for her mother, Jeanne transforms completely into the other woman. Her light brown hair is now black and her green eyes are brown. In her mother's apartment, she also takes on a different shape. Emotionally overwhelmed, Jeanne withdraws to her old nursery. There she finds a photo from her childhood in a drawer, which shows her as a blonde girl. Next to her, two women can be seen on it - one of them is the woman she now sees as her mother; the other is the woman she had previously perceived as her mother.

To find an explanation for her strange sensory perceptions, Jeanne travels by train to the Italian city where the photo was once taken. In a restaurant she meets the woman who she thinks is her real mother. When she speaks to the woman - the landlady of the house - she reacts angrily and gives Jeanne to understand that she doesn't know her. In Gianni, the woman's son, Jeanne recognizes her husband Teo again. However, he does not recognize her, but allows himself to be seduced by her. As they sleep together, Jeanne notices that Gianni feels different to Teo and urges him to stop. Gianni is confused about her behavior. While she thought she knew him, Jeanne only reminded him of a person who was long dead. One evening Jeanne follows a girl in black curls through the streets of the city and finally arrives at the restaurant, where a party is currently taking place. Jeanne gets into the living room of the house and hears the landlady arguing with her husband. In a bedroom, Jeanne begins to shrink and she transforms into the girl with black curls. The landlady then comes in and tells the girl that she has matured into a beautiful woman.

As it turns out, the landlady is Jeanne's real mother and Gianni is her brother. Jeanne's real name is Rosa. As a child, Rosa made friends with Jeanne when she was on vacation with her parents in Italy. Rosa accompanied Jeanne and her parents on an excursion. On the way there was a car accident that killed Jeanne. Rosa, on the other hand, lost her memory, no longer recognized her real mother and went to France with Jeanne's mother. Finally, Rosa travels back to France by train. On the way she turns back into the grown-up Jeanne with light brown hair and green eyes. At home she is greeted by Teo and their children. Suddenly she sees the black-haired Jeanne in front of her, who is talking to Teo instead of her. She smiles at Jeanne. The two women later sit together in front of a computer to write Jeanne's novel.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films describes the film as "[s] anfte [n] psychological thriller of solid tension, which develops the tricky plot with classical means". For Cinema , Don't Look Back - Shadows of the Past was an “[o] riginal psycho trip” that was “doubly played out”.

According to Prisma , “this thematically interesting surreal mix of thriller and psychological study” would have had potential in and of itself. Especially since the film with Sophie Marceau and Monica Bellucci “two top stars of the international cinema scene” were available. In the end, however, de Van's feature film debut is disappointing. At the beginning it was “extremely exciting”, “but then dragged along until the dissolution [...] that the viewer more and more doesn't care what is actually behind the protagonist's crisis”. In addition, there are “some unbelievable and strange scenes” at the expense of the pleasure “which therefore consists almost exclusively of looking at the two beautiful leading actresses”.
